The IP protection type (IP code) describes the suitability of electrical equipment for various environmental conditions and also indicates the protection of people against potential hazards during their use. The abbreviation "IP" stands for "International Protection". In English usage, the term "Ingress Protection" is often used. The protection type defines the protection of active parts against contact, foreign bodies and water. The degree of protection is indicated by two code numbers or combinations of numbers and letters, which are precisely defined in the national and international standards DIN EN 60529 and ISO 20653. The first code number or number/letter combination provides information about the protection of the housing against contact and foreign bodies. The second code number or combination of numbers and letters indicates the degree of protection of the housing against moisture or water penetration. The IP protection type should not be confused with the electrical protection class. This in turn describes the existing safety measures against dangerous voltages on touchable conductive parts that are not live during operation.
